Healthy Diet After Pregnancy

With pregnancy and delivery, a woman's body has been subjected to tremendous exertion and stress. It is of great importance to support one's body with a good and healthy diet after giving birth. There are basic recommendations given to recovering mothers after delivery.

For the breast-feeding mom, specific vegetables and health supplements can be taken in order to increase milk flow. These are called lactogenic herbs and foods. Carrot, yam, fennel, sea-salt, basil, and garlic are a few of them, as well as butter and olive oil.

For those who have developed anemia, it is advisable to load up on iron- rich foods. Eat lots of broccoli, tomato, and tomato juice, Brussels sprouts, and white wine. Egg yolks also help, but eat them in moderation, three times max weekly. Have lean meat (red), organ meats, and spinach.

Iron supplements are also available in pharmacies. Combine them with vitamin C intake for maximum benefit. Avoid red wine, coffee and tea, spinach and soy products. Avoid loading up on calcium rich foods which inhibit iron absorption. Take milk and cheese in moderation while you are yet dealing with anemia.

For those battling constipation, eat an abundance of fibrous foods like oats, bran, fruits, and green leafy veggies. Among these are papaya, dates, and raisins. Drink lemon juice, have lots of liquids (salt water). Take castor oil and milk daily. Stay away from spices and fried meals. Don't eat foods rich in preservatives.

Exercise is also important for constipated mothers. Make sure to do some form of exercise, like walking and simple house chores. Just make sure your body is ready and that you are able to exert the needed energy. Women still experience bleeding after giving birth and too much physical exertion can complicate that. Also, women who underwent a C-section need to take special care since they have a deep wound that needs healing. Do simple exercises on the onset and don't strain yourself.
